Education without values, is useful or a complete waste.

Education is the process of facilitating learning for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. In fact education ensures the overall development of a child. Education promotes the metamorphosis of a child to become a full fledged adult. Mere learning without promotion and development of values even discards the definition of education. Education of values and principles shapes and moulds a soul and humanist feelings in a mere body, as it was once.
Modern man lacks this kind of values due to the money oriented education that he gets. We witness different brutal activities, which shocks the human conscience, regularly in this modern period. There’s only one deeply rooted cause for this and that is the lack of value based education. News of terrorist attacks around the globe welcomes us on the morning tea table everyday. Most of the terrorists are well educated but use their knowledge and skills to make bombs rather than to help mankind. This is because they are not taught to respect their country, traditions or cultures. They are never ever taught about the greatness of their country or about patriotism. They believe that terrorist activities could lead them to heaven. No religion or culture has ever propagated terrorism. But the religious texts are now manipulated and defined in such a way that, they promote atrocities against fellow beings. We often forget that the manipulators are the beneficiaries, not us. This is because our educational system has never inculcated the true moral values in students. We have never taught them that to indulge in terrorist activity is a bad deed.
The grandmother’s tales, ballads, folk tales all have taught us to do good deeds by imprinting a factor of fear in us. They taught us that by doing bad deeds we may end up in hell and god would punish us. All those early texts too taught us honesty, generosity and compassion through fictions, as we regard them. Today the modern man distinguishes between facts and fiction. We have developed physically but have declined spiritually. What’s the purpose of all these discoveries when man himself has become a robot. We have labelled all those early texts as worthless, but now in this era of atrocities we understand their worth in shaping a human.
Martin Luther King Jr had said “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically.” Modern education without values has dismantled mans ability to think critically. It has made man a lackey. In this competitive world, we see people as only competitors, not as fellow humans.
Deforestation, destruction of natural habitats, environmental crisis are all consequences of this non value based education. Olden beliefs have always promoted protection of nature. But the new robotic man never ever bothered about them. This was because he was only taught to be rich, not to kind, he was only taught to be a machine rather than a human.
Aristotle once said “Educating the mind without educating the heart, is no education at all.” But today I am glad that at least some people of this new society understands it. The educational systems are trying to recognise their mistakes and is trying to impart values in students. They now include not only the exam marks but also the students’ behaviour, attitudes and values in the curriculum. But this is the case of only a little section. It’s high time that renaissance or resurrection of our value based education should happen.
Always remember Joseph Addison’s word “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to soul.” Thus in my opinion education without values is a complete waste. Without value based education you may receive success in your career but not in your life. Send your child to school not to make him/her a Doctor, but to make him/her a good citizen of this world. Stick on to your values firmly and it’s sure that you will succeed in life. Let’s hope that the golden age of value based education returns.......
